Population Growing And Changing

Canada's population was about 34 million in 2010; there is a census every five years. The last one was in 2011. The next one will be in 2016. In 2006 the census showed that Canada‘s population is growing and changing. Between 2001 and 2006, Canada’s population grew by 5.4%. Canada’s first inhabitants were the Aboriginal people.  They are 4% of Canada’s total population.  Today, there are 1.2 million Aboriginal people in Canada.  Also, Canada is a country of immigrants. More than 6 million Canadians are foreign-born.  In 2006, Canada’s immigrant population grew four times faster than the Canadian -born population. In 1901, Canada’s people were mostly of English, French, and Aboriginals origin. Today, Canadians have more than 200 different ethnic origins. The median age in Canada is 39.5. Canadians are getting older.  There are two main reasons for Canada’s aging population. The fertility rate is low-only 1.5 children per woman and the life expectancy of Canadians is increasing. It is now 82.5 years for women and 77.7 years for men.
